Why I use GrapheneOS

Recently I decided to switch my primary devices to avoid allowing big tech companies to profit off of my daily activities. I changed both my phone and tablet to an Android-based device, and then installed GrapheneOS to avoid any connection with Google.

GrapheneOS is an open-source operating system for devices (primarily Pixel devices) which focuses on security and privacy. The software was originally developed by Daniel Micay, who previously worked on CopperheadOS. After leaving that company, Micay continued to work on the Android Hardening project, which was later renamed as GrapheneOS.

What I really like about GrapheneOS is that the Google Play store and Google services are not installed by default. You can also set up profiles, such as home and work, and install only those apps that need to be installed in each profile. The profiles operate like separate phones and do not talk to each other. This allows me to keep my work items separate from my personal apps.

Also included in this operating system is the ability to choose what services each app can access. If I do not want my maps app to use the microphone, I can explicitly disallow that. And insure connection methods, like Bluetooth, can automatically turn off after a period of non-use. I really haven't found that this causes any problems, and turning it on again when needed is simple.

There is a web installer and command line installation process for GrapheneOS. I've had a little trouble with the command line version, but the web version has worked flawlessly. There is a slight bit of setup work as you customize preferences once all of your apps are installed, but this isn't too bad.

GrapheneOS provides frequent release notes to explain the updates and why they chose to make them. They often fix potential vulnerabilities before Google can fix them in the main Android release. Unfortunately, as of late, Google hasn't been as forthcoming with the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) which has made GrapheneOS's work harder. I am hopeful that one day they will partner with someone to release their own device.

I highly recommend this OS for your Android devices.
